Is it true that the Republican Party was more liberal than it is today?
Answer: Yes, it is most definitely true.
Take President Richard Nixon, for example. In the 1960s and 1970s, Nixon was not considered a "Rockefeller Republican." He was considered arch-conservative and was disliked by many liberals. And yet, Nixon favored universal health care, supported elements of the New Deal, and expanded Medicare. Nixon's plan for universal health care was comparable to the Affordable Care Act of 2010, a.k.a. Obamacare, but was more generous and far-reaching. Obamacare is tame compared to what Nixon had in mind. And the EPA started under Nixon's watch.
By 2018 standards, Nixon wouldn't get to first base in today's extreme wingnut Republican Party. He would be considered way too moderate by the GOP standards of 2018. And you know a party has truly gone off the deep end when even Richard Nixon in considered too left-wing.
In Europe, modern-day Republicans are not considered conservative. They're considered fascist and authoritarian.
